Li Yuan-Chia at Manchester Art Gallery

Updated: Nov 2, 2018

Speech Acts at the Manchester Art gallery is curated as part of a research project led by University of the Arts London which thinks about Black Artist and Modernism. The exhibition explores artists of African and Asian decent whose artistic career shapes the history of British art. In the second section of the show which focuses on the idea of imagination, an studio room is displayed for the reconstruction of LYC Museum and Art Gallery.

Li Yuan-Chia was a Chinese artist, poet and curator. His practices included installations, works and photography. He was one of a small number of artists of Chinese background active in the UK who also lived in Taiwan during his lifetime. As an artist with international reputation, however, Li Yuan Chia is an unfamiliar name in Taiwanese culture. Born in south China in 1929, Li studied art in Taiwan where he is considered to have been one of the founding fathers of Chinese modern art in the 1950s. He studied as a pupil of the Chinese visual artist, Li Zhong Sheng.
